description abstractLucite type HC-201, Saran, and several TYPCS of Plexiglas were tested as potential inexpensive receptors for integrating daily ultraviolet doses from sun and sky. Plexiglas type ?G? of 0.03 inch thickness was found most suitable for the purpose. Its optical density increase at wavelengths between 340 and 410 nm is an adequately linear function of UV doses on a horizontal surface according to calibration with a National Bureau of Standards spectral irradiance standard. This density change is stable in dark storage for several weeks and is independent of manufacturing variables. The optical degradation response is also a linear function of the receptor temperature, but this effect can be eliminated by exposure on a thermostated hot plate or can, according to preliminary tests, be satisfactorily corrected by an empirical formula on the basis of the maximum air temperature during exposure.
