description abstractWhat strategies can consulting engineering firms implement today that will help them achieve a competitive advantage in the future? To successfully compete in the future, firms must be able to identify and satisfy the needs of clients. Quality client service depends primarily on the skills, attitudes, and abilities of the employees. The most critical business strategy that consulting engineering firms should adopt is the commitment to retain and motivate quality employees. Trends are developing that are indicators of the “future workforce.” Some of these trends and anticipated changes in the business environment include: (1) a shortage of qualified engineers; (2) the need for increased training; (3) changes in people's values and what they are looking for from their jobs; (4) rapid development of information systems and technology; (5) the changing composition of the workforce; and (6) the need to deliver quality services to maintain a competitive edge. The bottom line is that consulting engineering firms must develop and implement strategies that motivate employees, because it is a firm's human resources that will enable it to achieve future success. The present paper outlines specific strategies that firms can incorporate to help them create an environment where employees will thrive and strive for quality. Firms must redefine the bottom line by allowing client satisfaction, high-quality standards, and profits to be their top priorities. Those firms that are willing to make innovative changes that enable them to maintain and motivate quality employees will be poised to capitalize on the promises of the next century.
