description abstractSix 125-cm3 metal mesh cages, filled with 99% pure naphthalene mothballs, were suspended near anemometers during 8 winter weeks. Each week the cages were weighed to determine how much evaporation had occurred. A least-squares linear regression of weekly naphthalene evaporation and weekly average wind speeds shows a coefficient of determination of 0.96. The results indicate that evaporation of naphthalene can be used to acquire reliable wind profile information at a very low cost.
