description abstractSferics detection equipment has been in operational use at the National Weather Service Forecast Office (NWSFO) in Minneapolls, Minn., since 1969. It has proven to be a valuable addition in the detection, analysis, and tracking of thunderstorms throughout this station's area of responsibility. Applications include: indicating the presence or absence of significant atmospheric electrical (thunderstorm-generated) activity; early detection of newly developing as well as intensifying thunderstorms; and an important aid to the severe weather weather detection/warning process.
