description abstractAn analysis is made of the effect of velocity shear and thermal stability on the computed value of the friction velocity in the surface boundary layers. An evaluation is made of the friction velocity in 1370 cases of stratified atmospheres. The changes in frictional velocity by variation of the existing velocity shear and lapse rate are shown. The results reveal, that for the data available for this study, for the lower portion of the atmosphere, the friction velocity as determined by Kao is primarily affected by the velocity shear, but not affected by thermal stratification and can be used during periods of any atmospheric stability condition.
