description abstractThe cumuli which form over the ocean near Puerto Rico cannot be the result of ?thermals.? A theory is evolved, based on the oscillation of the boundary between the well-mixed layer near the ocean and the cloud layer. The physical plausibility of this theory is investigated by a development of stability criteria from the frequency equation.
