description abstractThe Russian chronicles and the diaries of Czar Peter the Great were used to describe weather conditions of the late seventeenth century in European Russia. According to these written sources, a distinct deterioration of weather conditions took place in some regions of the Russian plain at that time. On the basis of the analysis of climatic anomalies and appropriate circulation situations over the period of instrumental observations, it is attempted to reconstruct the prevailing circulation patterns that may have caused the extremely unfavorable weather conditions in European Russia in the historical past.
