description abstractSome of the probability distribution models for precipitation totals and their applications are briefly reviewed. The general properties of a probability distribution model which is a mixture of gamma and Poisson distributions are discussed. A new approximation is given for the solution of likelihood equations and the efficiency of the estimators is obtained. An application also is made using the monthly precipitation totals.
