description abstractIn this technical note, the results on adsorption of acid and basic dyes by sulfonated coal are presented. A mathematical model based on adsorption isotherm was developed to predict the desorption of dyes from the sorbent. There was a good agreement between the predicted and experimentally determined values for basic dyes only. An attempt to understand the nature of binding of dyes was made from the desorption pattern of dyes from sulfonated coal using different eluants
