Aesthetic Design Philosophy Utilized for California State Bridges

Abstract

This paper discusses the predominant bridge types designed and constructed in the western regions of the United States, emphasizing the utilization of continuous cast‐in‐place prestressed concrete box‐girder bridges in the West, and traces the evolution of bridge design in California during this century. The design of other concrete bridge types to satisfy special site conditions is illustrated with pictures and cost data. This shows that the proper structure type is utilized for a particular site, regardless of cost. The philosophy and approach to aesthetic design of bridges in California is discussed to emphasize the small additional cost of architectural treatment to achieve aesthetic goals through the proper modification of the required structural elements without adding unsightly and nonfunctional appurtenances. Illustrations of the various conditions that dictate special aesthetic design treatment combined with the square‐foot costs both during year of construction and projected to current year costs highlight the design philosophy and techniques emphasized by California's department of transportation. Some major structures that received special architectural treatment that enhanced their aesthetic appeal without detracting from their primary function or adding significant additional costs are illustrated.
