| description abstract | A 90° angle for parking stalls relative to access aisles is usually recommended in the literature. This study reexamines the optimal parking angle using mathematical analysis and field tests. The area required per stall in large parking lots is formulated as a function of the parking angle and, by differentiation, the angle minimizing that area is found to be approximately 70°. Field tests indicate that a 70° parking layout is also preferable to a 90° layout in terms of maneuverability and safety. Evidence is presented that the Ricker equation for computing aisle widths should be modified. | |
