description abstractAccurate prediction of the ultimate capacity of engineering structures by numerical models depends on their ability to account for the nonlinearities involved in the problem. The use of the finite-element method often requires considerable expertise which is not widely available in the design community. Two methods of developing simple prediction equations are outlined in this paper, based on results from finite-element parametric studies of representative structures. These are applied respectively to partially restrained reinforced concrete slabs and steel pipes. A comparison with limited experimental data showed reasonable accuracy, thus suggesting that the methods could be used in a wider context.
