| description abstract | The management of rotational irrigation water distribution as practiced in Bangladesh could be improved. This study in the Ganges‐Kobadak irrigation project included fields in nine tertiary areas along three secondary canals. Irrigation water shortages were experienced in most parts of the system during 1983‐1985 and will continue until irrigation water delivery amounts are significantly increased. Average rice yields in Aus (3.62 t/ha) and Aman (4.33 t/ha) seasons are above the national average. However, yield increases could be realized with improved water management practices, as suggested in this paper. Adoption of the proposed pump operation and cropping schedules, along with improvement in implementation of rotation water distribution, will help in achieving benefits from increased crop production and reduced costs. | |
