description abstractThis study deals with the optimum design of an underwater glider that utilizes buoyancy control as a means of propulsion. The glider’s hydrodynamic lifting surfaces are designed for maximum forward velocity. Optimum travel paths of the system are developed for missions in clear waters and around obstacles. Energy consumption at different operating depth are discussed and compared with other propulsion systems. The system can be utilized for moving scuba divers, small submersibles and instrument packages underwater with minimum effort in conditions where the propulsion speed is not critical.
