| description abstract | Theoretical and experimental analyses are developed for the thermal expansion of a tool and a cylindrical work during face-cutting with a lathe. Theoretical investigation considers temperature distributions in the tool and the work at the cutting position, and these temperature distributions relate to the elongations of the work and the tool. The experimental investigation was conducted on a lathe turning at the end face of a solid cylindrical work. The results of sample calculations for thermal expansion coincide significantly with the experimental results. When the end face of the work is machined from the center point to the circular surface, the end face deforms to become convex; when it is machined from the circular surface to the center point, the end face deforms to become concave. | |
