| description abstract | A general formulation is given for the problem of torsion of a cylinder embedded in another cylinder in the presence of a cylindrical crack at the interface. The present formulation leads to a coupled pair of dual relations involving trigonometric series. By an extension of certain methods of solving dual series equations an integral equation is obtained which in general is singular. Stress singularities near the crack tip and at the juncture when there is no crack are discussed. Based upon a numerical solution of the integral equation, stress-intensity factor, torque, and several other quantities of interest are obtained for the homogeneous case when the radius of the outer cylinder is infinitely large. | |
