description abstractA comparison between the linear and nonlinear seismic analysis of a thin unreinforced steel reactor containment vessel is presented. The effects of the nonlinear coupling between the low Fourier harmonic excitations and the higher Fourier harmonics producing an ovalling response are examined. Imperfection shapes of the containment vessel are employed to provide the mechanism for this response.
