| description abstract | Three suggested phases of improvement in the design methods for gray iron components are: (a) design based on accurate strength and deformation analyses, instead of the currently used elastic formulas; (b) an ultimate strength instead of working stress approach to ensure consistent strength designs; and (c) factors of safety based on probabilistic methods to help eliminate bias based on the behavior of the material. An initial contribution covering these three aspects is presented. | |
