description abstractThe detailed deformation characteristics involved in axisymmetric plastic indentation was examined. Circular punches with flat and hemispherical ends were indented into specimens prepared from SAE 1215 steels under as-received and annealed conditions. The load-displacement curves were recorded, and measurements were made of the geometrical changes of the workpieces and of the strain distributions for various punch-workpiece dimensions. Furthermore, the mode of deformation was examined by revealing the flow lines, and fracturing of the workpiece was also observed.
