description abstractThe purpose of this paper is to describe a track inspection car currently being used in the United States, and to discuss the development of a track quality index, which is a major benefit afforded by the inspection data accumulated through operation of the car. From the development of a track quality index, vital information describing the ride quality of track can be made available to guide maintenance officers in funding and scheduling track maintenance.
