description abstractThe development of a magnetostrictive sensor for generating and detecting guided waves in ferromagnetic plate is described. The sensor consists of a channel-shaped core and coils wound around the core along its length. It is shown that the sensor is capable of generating and detecting both the symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb wave modes and the shear horizontal wave modes in plates. It is also found that the beam pattern produced by the sensor follows the pattern expected for a line source in a two-dimensional medium.
