description abstractRecent developments in solid state physics are used to derive a technique for determining the response of metals to dynamic loads. Design formulas are derived which predict the response of a metal to general short time loadings, in terms of maximum stress, pulse duration, and pulse form. The necessary material parameters, three, to establish high strain rates response are identified. Experimental evidence verifying the derived criteria is presented.
