description abstractA new approach to the mechanics of metal cutting is demonstrated by applying the principle of dynamic similarity to the plastic flow in the cutting process. In accordance with known effects of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress of materials, three dimensionless parameters are chosen by theoretical considerations, two for temperature distribution and one for strain rate effects. For convenience, a secondary set of dimensionless parameters is derived from the first. Nondimensional cutting force and non-dimensional stresses on the tool face are defined. Successful application of dimensional analysis to experimental results is presented.
