description abstractProblems of process optimization and in particular automatic optimization are currently being approached from many different directions. Investigations in process control and instrumentation, studies in statistical methods for the design of experiments for obtaining optima, studies on noise spectra and on numerical maximization subject to restraints as represented by linear and nonlinear programming, all throw light on the directions in which we must advance.
