description abstractNonaxisymmetric forcing was applied to the vortex breakdown flowfield of a strongly swirling jet and its effects were investigated experimentally. It is shown that the spreading rate of the jet can be increased due to the excitation of the helical mode instability of the breakdown flowfield. This can be achieved for extremely low amplitudes of excitation.
