description abstractThis paper deals with the friction coefficient for a plastic contact with due regard to the volume deformation of the plastic material and adhesion at the contact. Equations are derived which express the relation of friction coefficient with mechanical and geometrical characteristics as well as external factors. The value of penetration at which the adhesion and plowing components remain similar is found by qualitative analysis. The commonly known relation between load and friction coefficients is restated. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental ones which have been reported both in the USSR and other countries. This comparison shows little or no disparity.
