description abstractThe findings from approximate equations for the elastic analysis of elliptical pipe bends under in-plane bending or pressurization are tested against an exact thin shell analysis. Although stresses are not compared, the simple equations give, with surprising accuracy, the flexibility of pipe bends and the bending moment in a pressurized torus.
