description abstractThis paper describes the design, execution, mathematical modelling, and simulation of a simple, yet very useful quenching experiment—the asymmetric one-sided quenching of a beam. This experiment yields valuable information regarding the mechanical variables at the end of a quenching process, without the need for measurement of residual stresses in the quenched object. The final (residual) curvature of the beam is strongly sensitive to the inelastic deformation behavior of the material of the quenched object. This problem—experiment and simulation—is recommended as a benchmark problem for future research in this subject area.
