description abstractThe general theme of the growing use of electronic systems for the control and monitoring of large diesel engines is discussed. Central to the theme is a new digital governing system for industrial, traction, and marine diesels. This new governing system is capable also of being a marine propulsion controller or engine management/protection system and thus can be a very cost-effective package. In wider use it can work under the overall control of a power management host computer and interface with engine health monitoring equipment. Experience to date with the new governor is reported and plans for its future use outlined.
