description abstractVarious theories exist for predicting the pressure on the walls of bins filled with granular material. These theories, such as Janssen’s (1895) theory, usually neglect the effect of the compressibility of the granular material, which is relevant for many materials. Here this effect is studied numerically, and the results are compared with a new approximate theory. This comparison shows that the agreement is excellent.
