description abstractThis paper outlines the principles of a technique which might, under certain circumstances, be an alternative to conventional SONAR systems. The technique, known as auto by cross-correlation using varying delay times, is briefly outlined, and its strengths and limitations are investigated using computer simulations. To conclude, mention is made of progress in the construction and development of an ACVD acoustic array, and some possible applications suggested.
