description abstractA sedimentary rock is modeled by a random packing of identical spherical particles. The connected pore space is filled with an inviscid, compressible fluid. A low-frequency expansion technique is used to calculate the effective wave speeds explicitly in terms of the microstructural properties of the rock considered. The effect of both the pore fluid and the initial confining pressure to which the rock is subjected can be included in the calculations.
