description abstractThe similarities between the response of a viscoplastic material and the response of metals during forging are noted. The yield condition and flow law for an incompressible viscoplastic material are used as a basis for an approximate solution of the problem of the compression of a circular disk. The rate effects associated with the presence of time-dependent flow are observed to evolve as an integral part of the solution.
